Registration
Advance registration is now open for the fall meeting of the New England chapter of the Music Library Association (NEMLA). The meeting will take place at the Boston Athenaeum, Boston, MA, on Friday, October 4th, 2013. If you plan to join us, please complete and submit the registration form by Friday, September 27th.
Our afternoon program includes a choice of a tour of the Athenaeum, or an introduction to its conservation and digitization programs (see descriptions below). To assist the staff at the Athenaeum in planning, please indicate on the registration form which of these sessions you would like to attend.
As usual, we will have a pre-meeting dinner on Thursday, October 3rd (location TBD). Please note on the registration form if you would like to join fellow music librarians for dinner on Thursday, or after our meeting on Friday, October 4th.
Please register by Friday, September 27th.
If you are attending a NEMLA meeting for the first time, we would like to welcome you by waiving the registration fee. However, please be sure to register by clicking on the link above. This ensures that we may prepare a nametag for you and arrange for adequate refreshments. Also, see our information about the First Time Attendees Program here. Please note that funding is regrettably not available for all first-time attendees, but we do strive to accommodate as many as we can on a first come, first served basis.

As part of the celebration of the New England Music Library Association’s 50th anniversary, we’ll take the opportunity to reminisce about NEMLA’s past, celebrate its present, and look forward to its future. A panel of former and long-time members will discuss the history of the chapter, their memories of the organization, and the changes they have seen – and foresee still to come – in music librarianship.

Athenaeum Tour
The Athenaeum, one of the oldest libraries in the United States, opened to members in 1807 and moved in 1849 to its current location. Founded to serve as an encyclopedic library for its nineteenth century members, the Athenaeum today focuses its collecting in the humanities: its library of 600,000+ titles has particular strengths in Boston and New England history, biography, English and American literature, and fine and decorative arts. Its Special Collections are world-renowned, and include manuscripts and rare books, maps, prints, and photographs, paintings, sculpture, and archival materials reflecting Boston’s culture from 1792 to the present.
Introduction to Athenaeum Conservation Lab and Digital Collections
The Athenaeum’s dedicated Conservation Lab, opened in 1963, preserves its works on paper, including rare books, maps, manuscripts, prints, architectural drawings, broadsides, and pamphlets. Conservators work closely with curators to put a wide range of the Athenaeum’s rare and unique materials – from early American and Confederate imprints to daguerreotypes, watercolors, and drawings – online in its Digital Collections.
Area Info, Travel, and Parking
The Boston Athenaeum is located at 10 1/2 Beacon Street, within walking distance of Boston Common and the Red and Green lines at Park Street Station. We’ll be steps away from the Freedom Trail, and only a short walk away from Boston’s Theatre District.
Driving Directions
Out-of-towners may wish to park at Riverside Station, Alewife Station, or Quincy Adams Station and take the T into Boston (parking is cheaper and traffic delays are less likely to be a problem than if driving into Boston.) Cash fare is $2.50, or $2.00 with CharlieCard.
Driving directions to Riverside Station (for those coming from west of Boston):
From I-90 E take Exit 14 to I-95 S. Take Exit 22 to Grove St. Turn right at end of ramp on Grove St. Go 0.4 mi. then left into station. If using GPS, address is approx. 335 Grove St., Newton, MA. Parking at Riverside is $6.00. Take the Green D Line from Riverside Station to Park Street Station. This is the only line that serves this station, so you’ll need to remember it to return to Riverside.
Driving directions to Alewife Station (for those coming from north of Boston):
From I-95 S take Exit 29A to MA-2 E. Continue 6 miles and take exit toward Alewife Station. Station will be on your left. If using GPS, address is Alewife Station Access Road, Cambridge, MA. Parking at Alewife is $7.00. Take the Red Line to Park Street Station.
Driving directions to Quincy Adams Station (for those coming from south of Boston):
From I-95 N take Exit 12 to I-93 N. Take exit 18-7 for MA-3 S. Take exit 18 for Washington St. toward E Braintree. Turn left onto Washington St. Continue onto Independence Ave. Quincy Adams Station will be on the left. If using GPS, address is 177 Independence Ave. Parking at Quincy Adams is $7.00. Take the Red Line inbound to Park Street Station.
Driving directions for those who prefer to drive into Boston:
From the west.
From I-90, take Exit 22 (Prudential Center/Copley Square). Follow signs to Copley Square (right lane). Turn left at the first light, onto Dartmouth St. Turn right at the second light, onto Boylston St. Note: Boylston splits at Arlington–stay left! Turn left on Charles St., then right on Beacon St.
From the north or south:
From I-93, take Exit 26 (Storrow Drive). Exit at Government Center/Kendall Sq./Cambridge. Follow signs to Government Center (Cambridge St.). Stay on Cambridge St. as it turns into Tremont St. From Tremont, take a right onto Park and another right onto Beacon.
For parking near the Athenaeum, the closest garage is the Boston Common Garage (Zero Charles St.). Parking for up to 10 hours is $23.00. The maximum charge for 24 hours is $28.00.
